War is Obsolete
This simple, three word expression holds the key to our moment in history. If we
can grasp the wisdom of this statement, we will know what to do.
The word "obsolete" does NOT mean that something no longer exists...
although, with regard to war, this is the goal. What is meant here is that it is
no longer useful, or has been replaced by something better.
We still have typewriters, but the computer, and word-processing software has
made the manual typewriter obsolete. Same with the horse and buggy.
It's all about function, and, when it comes to war, the old method of
"fighting it out" with a winner and a loser, is clearly out of date.
What's new
If war is obsolete, then what is new? The answer is relationship. It's that
simple. War assumes that there is a fundamental disconnect in the Universe, and
that actions don't have fixed consequences.
But, as we have learned, everything matters, and there is no part of the
system that is not intimately connected to every other part. It's just the way
things are.
How does this translate to war, and retiring the institution of war at this
moment in time? It goes like this. Because everything is interconnected, and we
are all one living community, we MUST work for an inclusive solution if we,
individually, want to survive.
Value of Conversation
Because each situation is different, it becomes apparent that we need each
other if we are going to see our way forward. We need to talk! By engaging in
conversations that matter, we can broaden our perspectives, and learn what needs
to be done.
In addition, by talking, we will be emerging a new culture, founded in
broader principles, and based on a wider base of thinking. By talking, we change
ourselves, and thereby change our culture.
Conversation is the means to an elegant, safer and benevolent new world. And,
by talking about war now, we can prevent another war such as the one in Iraq.
And that is good news for everyone. Right?
